Created by a master calligrapher, this work enshrines one of the most celebrated essays in Chinese literary history. The two characters 「陋室」— meaning the humble room — are rendered in commanding, ink-drenched brushstrokes, accompanied by a full column of the original text from Liu Yuxi’s Lou Shi Ming (Inscription on a Humble Room), written during the Tang dynasty.

A mountain need not be high — if an immortal dwells there, it is renowned. A river need not be deep — if a dragon lives within, it is sacred. This room may be humble, but it is fragrant with my virtue. Moss traces green upon the steps; grass colours the curtain blue. My guests are scholars of great learning; no common men pass through. I play my unadorned lute and read the golden sutras. No discordant strings disturb my ears; no official documents weary my body. Like Zhuge’s thatched cottage in Nanyang, like Ziyun’s pavilion in western Shu — as Confucius said: what is humble about it?
